Television Licence Information

This site provides information about TV Licensing - the name used by the BBC to manage the UK television licence system.

This site is not associated with TV Licensing, but was created to help correct misinformation regarding the UK Television Licence.

Do I Need A Licence?

A UK television licence is not required to own a television. A licence is only required if you watch live television programmes.

If your television is used for some other purpose, such as watching DVDs or listening to music, you do not need a licence.

But They Say I Do!

Unfortunately TV Licensing are notorious for attempting to confuse the issue. Some of the techniques used include:

  • Intimidating letters
  • Misleading advertisements
  • Commission-driven sales staff
  • Forging signatures

One of the most basic principles of a fair society is that the innocent should not not have to prove their innocence. If you are accused of performing an unlawful activity, your accuser must present evidence to support their claim.

TVL appear to work from the opposite point of view, and incorrectly assume that anyone who owns a television must also require a licence.
